Zi-Yu Workshop - Li Huimei

Li Huimei (李惠美) has been interested in fabrics since childhood and has worked for over twenty years in fashion design. In the early years, she worked as a stage costumer designer in Taipei. After her marriage, she moved back to Taitung with her husband where they ran a clothing shop and convenience store together. Her love of fashion remained unaffected however. After joining the I.li Workshop, she began thinking about setting up her own workshop as well.

Li Huimei (李惠美) is from the Amis tribe so she is adept at using bright colors to make clothing and accessories look fantastic. Innovative designs based on traditional styles created elegant and stylish aboriginal wear. Due to the fine workmanship and high quality, she is always flooded with orders. The colorful clothing is a delight to wear and look at as well.

Apart from fine clothing, Zi-Yu Workshop also works with woven shell ginger and leather. Waterproofing combined with shell ginger leaves create stylish and practical backpacks that have a stiff, strong body and demonstrate the beauty of hand artisanship.

Li Huimei (李惠美) is also committed to preserving traditional Amis clothing by teaching women in her village how to make traditional tribal clothing. Watching the students study every detail and the pride in their eyes when they finish a project fills Li Huimei (李惠美) with a sense of achievement.

(Chen Wei)

Chen became interested in clothing at the age of 25 and encountered fashion design because she wanted to learn a life skill. Though she had always lived in Taipei, Chen Wei (陳葳) moved back to her hometown of Taitung after marrying her husband. In this way, she was introduced to the traditional crafts.

Chen had studied weaving at the Taitung Vocational Center and her talent was re-arranging even the most clashing colors into a unique, harmonious yet exciting style. The hand-sewn glitter on the fabrics and traditional Amis shawls are excellent examples of her color-matching skills. Chen expects a great deal from her work. Students of her shawl glass always joke about their teacher's obsession with removing the glitter instead. If a flower sewn with great over two hours has even the slightest flaw, Chen Wei (陳葳) would unerringly home in on this flaw then demand the student to pull the threads out and start over again. This however was good training for the students as well.

Her impeccable attitude means every work is almost perfect. Chen Wei (陳葳) said herself that since she was now making traditional clothing, she wanted the results from her students and herself to demonstrate the quality of the Amis. This was a way of showing their respect to their own culture as well.

Dharti Mata Sustainable workshop

Dharti Mata means "Mother Earth" in Nepalese and Sanskrit.
Mother is the land that gives birth to life and the spirit that gives life meaning!
Mother and Nature are symbols of constant giving without expectation of return.
In modern society however, the exploitation of women and Nature means that women and Nature have both come under increasing threat and harm!

The founding of the Dharti Mata Sustainable Workshop reminds us of the need to awaken women's right to self-determination as well as the public’s love for Nature. By forming a cycle of women and Nature's energy and resources, we can nurture the land and the human soul as well.

Mission:

(1) Promote the use of Lovelady Pads in Nepal, Taiwan as well as eco-positive menstruation and around the world.

(2) Create jobs for women in Nepalese villages as well as develop rural women's micro-economy and skills.

(3) Develop everyday items that are friendly to the environment, women and family, and practice a sustainable way of life.

(4) Set up community organic agricultural product shops and women's workshops in order to cultivate the villager's business skills.
Use fair trade and social enterprises as the foundation for realizing sustainable community development in Nepal.

Fire Studio - Sumi Runi

Sumi Runi (舒米如妮) is from the Amis tribe and lives in the Gangkou Tribal Village (Makutaay) in Hualien. When she returned to her homeland 16 years ago, she saw how the land of her ancestors was gradually falling into disrepair and the water terrace farms next to the sea had all but disappeared. Bed & breakfast guesthouses and "For Sale" signs had sprung up in their place. Trees had even started growing on the water terrace farms. Sumi was determined to restore the traditional industry that had been lost for over 20 years. Over the past 4 years, she did her best to persuade the others in her tribe to start farming again and restore the beauty of the east coast's water terrace farms.

  About Fire…

Many years ago, a group of people who loved to dream sat down by a bonfire at night and imagined what they wanted to do. They ended up building the Fire - a building with a sloped roof and wave-patterned concrete interior.

More than a decade later, the starry sky of Shitiping remains as wide open as ever. On many occasions, people searching for that special something on the East Coast make a stop on Taiwan Provincial Highway 11 and come to the Fire Studio.

The driftwood, the color weavings, the specialty cuisine… The interior of Fire remains as open as ever. In recent years, the Fire Studio has allowed tribal arts to attend other art camps. They even brought the Council for Cultural Affairs' village artist program to the Gangkou Tribal Village as well.

Now, the younger generation has set up their own Mima'an Café.
Having grown up in the tribe then returned to see how the scenery of the East Coast had changed over the years, the café's mistress Sumi has a dream of a coast filled with lily flowers and water terraces.

The Fire Studio has been pushing the Forestry Bureau to sponsor the rehabilitation of the wetlands at Shitiping. The once dried out, overgrown farms cut off from water have now been cleaned up. "Environmental art" made from straw, timber and other natural materials now introduce people to the land once more in the hopes of growing "Sea Rice" and bringing water buffaloes back to the tribe.

After a long wait, the dream farm of the heart has now come true.
