(Paculi vennen)

The Craftswoman - Han Yijun (韓宜均) (Paculi Vennen)
I grew up in Taipei but returned to the tribe many years ago with my mother. I joined Dragonfly Studio through my mother and, in the beginning, I worked as a bartender in Dragonfly Studio's only attached café. As my mother was a weaver with Dragonfly and my aunt (senior artisan with Dragonfly Studio) was involved in glass crafting, I became interested in glass beads.

When I first started working with glass beads, my own culture was foreign to me. So my teacher Shi Jialing (施佳伶) first introduced me to the cultural stories of the Paiwan Tribe as well as the meaning of the glass beads. In this way, I came to understand the values of the Paiwan Tribe. Shi Xiuju (施秀菊), the studio owner, did not try to restrict everyone's work or skills to a particular area. She wanted to allow everyone to learn everything they were interested in.

Several years later, I got married and had kids so I left the studio to look after my children at home. When my child got older, I returned to this studio and this time chose cultural work because it was what I enjoyed.

Dragonfly Studio is a cultural classroom. The crafting of glass beads is a very complex process where every step has to be done by hand. Starting with the initial preparations (crafting of insulation rods, insulation clay, glass drawing, crafting of raw forms, patterning, cooling), every process required absolute concentration. With the guidance and support of my instructor and other artisans, Shi arranged for me to work with more complex glass beads. Whenever customers would buy glass beads that I had crafted, I felt so happy. This made more willing to challenge techniques that are more difficult and built up my self-confidence as well.

After my husband passed away in an accident the year before, my three kids became the reason I became even more determined to use everything that I've learn over the years to carry on.

Apart from my work as a glass artisan, I have also taken on the role of the tribal village tour guide. In the future, I hope to learn even more advanced glass crafting techniques or even combine different materials to create products with my own personal style. I will strive to promote our culture and make my children proud.

Motherhood

In 2004, after completing her internship at an internal aid organization in Washington D.C, Eriko Yamaguchi (山口繪理子) decided to travel on her own to Bangladesh and see what the people in this "developing" country really needed. By chance, she encountered a "Jute Bag" in a corner of the market. The local people called jute the golden fiber and most of it was made into hemp sacks for carrying coffee beans and flour. Jute however absorbed 5 ~ 6 times the carbon dioxide of other plants during photosynthesis. It was 100% biodegradable as well making it a raw material with tremendous potential.

Yamaguchi (山口繪理子) decided in 2006 to take advantage of this unique local material and employ local people to handcraft high-quality bags that Japanese consumers would find attractive. Their purchases on their own initiative would help to create fair and sustainable economic activity in Bangladesh. After many years of hard work, Motherhood has now become a social enterprise that has a spot on the fashion catwalk.

Film director Looloo and designer Ayo decided to use their expertise in "image and design" to launch a sustainable social reform movement where the design and sewing of bags will provide aboriginal villages, rural women and even wheelchair-bound mothers with a livelihood and bring back the golden age of tailoring. To realize this dream, la yoo moved to Tainan with her newborn child and set up shop in an old house in historic Fucheng. Here she taught visitors to make their own handbags and used the opportunity to communicate her ideal as well. Though there was no generous financial backer, the concept of "crafting bags of happiness for family members" guided their design of beautiful yet practical bags. They now continue to move forward with firm purpose, one step at a time in the spirit of social enterprise.
