First Issue: Origins

The Gender Equality Council of the Executive Yuan and the Foundation for Women's Rights Promotion and Development have re-examined the cultivation of women entrepreneurs today to better understand the problems faced by women entrepreneurs and the unique nature of women entrepreneurship. The Women's Innovation and Economic Assistance Platform Plan was then set up with its core axis being the four key economic indicators of "Capacity and Skills Building", "Access to Markets", "Access to Capital" and "Women's Leadership". These were defined in the 2011 APEC San Francisco Declaration. Overseas experience was used to promote diversified development of non-government organizations and individual women, consolidate existing resources, integrate women's entrepreneurship service mechanisms, connect online women's business support resources and cross-platform business exchanges, and promote the concept of sustainable social enterprises.

The current "Women's Innovation and Economic Assistance Platform Plan" is a response to APEC's emphasis on women's innovation and economy in recent years. The promotion of social innovation, international trade and economic expertise as well as participation in international trade shows and conferences are used to provide local women entrepreneurs with innovation and economic knowledge as well as a support platform. The hosting of workshops and issuing of e-newsletters help to bring together the experiences and stories of women entrepreneurship in Taiwan and around the world, build up women's consensus and capacity in innovation and economy, concentrate women's entrepreneurship resources, professional knowledge and skills, and strengthen the power of women’s entrepreneurship.

The Craftswoman - Dong-Xie Ruizhu

At the end of 2005, the Diverse Employment Development Project introduced an Amis mother from the military dependents village to Aboriginal Cultural Crafts and the traditional glass beads of the Paiwan Tribe.

Seven years later, Ruizhu (瑞珠) recalls how the workshop seemed like boot camp at first. From the very beginning, she had to overcome her fear of fire because the glass had to be crafted using a very hot flame. At the time, even though she struggled to control the fire she stubbornly refused to give up. "If other people can do it, why can't I?" Thus began her dance with the flames.

Glass crafting is a very complex process that is carried out completely by hand, so a strong emphasis was placed on mastering the basic skills. Starting with disassembling and washing of the beads, she gradually progressed to pulling fine strands of glass from the glass rod and creating small tires (spacing beads used between glass beads). Every step required total concentration. As the number of tools used increased, she gradually joined the production line crafting beads in the traditional patterns. For Ruizhu (瑞珠), the pattern of the Swallowtail Butterfly Bead proved to be the most challenging of the traditional patterns. The painted spots, the lines, the size of the bead, the color of the glass rod, the mix of hardness and softness, and the amount of force used for drawing glass all required repeated practice in order to craft these beautiful jewels.

With the help of workshop director Xiuhui (秀慧) and other partners as well as through the dint of constant practice and breakthroughs, Ruizhu (瑞珠) has in recent years not only continued to work at the workshop but is also now teaching glass crafting to students at Gongdong Vocational High School. In the future, Ruizhu (瑞珠) hopes to combine new ideas with the traditional patterns to create her own distinctive style.

International Social Enterprise

Women Like Us is an English social enterprise dedicated to providing employment services to women with children. Its goal is to help women that have become mothers find suitable part-time jobs as well as provide them with advice and support during the job search process.

Karen Mattison and Emma Stewart, the founders of Women Like Us, were both part- and full-time mothers who worked for charities on a part-time basis. They noticed that these organizations needed more part-time workers like them. When they were picking up their children from school, they also met many mothers who wanted to do something else in addition to looking after their kids. Many were skilled or had a strong professional background but were having trouble finding a suitable job. Karen and Emma realized that were many women out there who had been "out of the loop" because of motherhood now looking to return to the work force. Having built up a consensus, they began planning their new enterprise. Having worked in public departments, Karen and Emma knew that their enterprise would not only help employers and mothers find employees and jobs, but also help the government to reduce the unemployment rate as well. For this reason, they created a platform to connect businesses (including local governments) with women and provide each of them with the resources they need. As the mission of the business was to help women like Karen and Emma, its name naturally became "Women Like Us". This was how an employment agency with social enterprise features came to be.

In April, 2012, Women Like Us founded two partner social enterprises to provide all businesses, employers and job brokers in England with a platform where they can directly post branded advertisements and search for all kinds of part-time workers.

In 2005, Emma and Karen did not just venture beyond taking children to and from school. They also opened up a whole new world of their own.
